Drivers to migrate must to any new infrastructure must be substantiated and should not be adopted for immediate result, but to enable future savings in time and cost by being able to adopt new innovative processes and devices as they come to market. In any key project, it is important to perform engineering and determine the basic specifications at an early stage. Get authorization from customer to proceed from the Front End Engineering Design (FEED), then proceed with the engineering phase, configuration and implementation, staging and startup and finally commissioning.

MG Strategy+ works diligently to ensure that the customer recognizes the value and importance of technology to their operations and customers, through the development of an integrated solution that is based on the control system, bus-enabled field instruments, and network infrastructure with asset management software.

Technical Aspects Shifting your field devices and electrical systems to Digital Bus or Intelligent Technology.

Digital Bus technology is seen as a key industrial automation technology that will continue to help industrial facilities achieve major increases in efficiency and cost effectiveness. A Digital Solution can be selected by your organization to improve productivity and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) by maximizing the availability of our plant equipment and facilities. With a Digital Solution, an organization can provide added value to their existing instrumentation, electrical systems and plant operations by establishing a digital communications infrastructure that builds upon the latest control system technologies to share data.

Smart Electrical devices are preconfigured and pre-programmed devices with the ability to integrally support remote monitoring, configuration and control of embedded intelligent devices through two way real-time communication between the user and an apparatus. The two way real-time communication is achieved by using a single interface point that provides an easy to use gateway to the embedded intelligent devices. The graphical user interface provides a consistent look and feel that provides seamless access and control of the intelligent devices. The power of the intelligent devices remains but the interface inconsistencies are eliminated. Users don’t have to worry about reading or remembering different user manuals that are normally required to utilize the different intelligent devices.

Asset maximization

After implementation of a pilot; its evaluation and results of the realized benefits and savings are to be documented; planning for future instruments/systems throughout the system must also be planned for with full understanding and commitment from client for a Smart device infrastructure. A remote asset management package that reduces the maintenance workload for field personnel and identifies issues to implement corrective actions that improve availability and performance rate over the entire facility life cycle is also a key point.

Process or System Modelling

Advanced process control (APC), real time optimization (RTO), process monitoring, operator training simulation, abnormal situation management (ASM) and fault detection and isolation (FDI) are all based on some version of process modeling. Models are a very effective way to embed “knowledge” in process automation. We work with clients to implement the best suited modelling tool (offline or online) to increase the process “autonomy” level that grows more and more from “reactive” to “proactive”.

Maintenance Costs

Move from a time based preventative maintenance program to a predictive maintenance program; Predictive maintenance (PdM) techniques are designed to help determine the condition of in-service equipment in order to predict when maintenance should be performed and drastically reduce/eliminate equipment defects that could lead to unplanned downtime or unnecessary expenditures. This approach provides cost savings over routine or time-based preventive maintenance, because tasks are performed only when warranted.

Collection and analysis of equipment and process data shall provide extended life expectancy of equipment when compared to historical equipment replacements; reduced labor costs as the frequency of visits to the sites is lower due to issues based maintenance works being performed. The fieldbus devices and controller platform can also be coupled with a Performance Based Supervision Solution; performing control loop analysis based on normal operating data. Rather than being device-centric only, these Performance Based Supervision Solution exist in a server workstation. They read normal operating data to perform diagnostics about the health and performance of the control system. The performance supervision software monitors the process 24 hours a day, and uses normal operating data to develop control loop diagnostics. No unusual tests or stroking of control valves is necessary to develop diagnostics. With this use of existing technology and performance supervision software, any actuator can be monitored including traditional 4-20 ma devices. As there can be a slow migration to field bus technology depending on each customer, the installed base of the traditional 4-20 ma technology is enormous. It may take many years to make a complete migration to digital based field devices. As some customers may never migrate and for basic diagnostics do not need to; as long as the control system has connectivity to the data and the diagnostic calculations can be performed, a foundation for improved system performance can be built.

Costs and ROI are based on each client’s control system architecture; budget and future projects.

Value Proposition - Main drivers
  • Enterprises with multiple sites and complex energy data.
  • Costs increase, profit margins shrink and emissions targets threaten to limit growth. Energy, in many cases, becoming the second or third highest capital expenditure in an organization. Managing how it is purchased and used is of strategic importance.
Value Proposition
  • It encompasses differing utility and data source types with the direct purpose being to quantify the costs of energy and relate them to a customer's everyday business processes.
  • Industrial plants can save up to 15% or more on process-related energy use and over 7% in total utility costs if opportunities are properly identified and addressed (Studies by the U.S. Department of Energy).
  • Savings can be far higher when taking into account the additional productivity gains and avoided capital costs realized through a more reliable and efficient energy infrastructure.
  • For each efficiency project, the expected return on investment can often be exceeded when programs implement industry standard techniques in measurement and verification

Differentiation factors

Sustaining an energy management program cost around 1 to 2% of total energy expenditure (omitting capital expenses). The selected enterprise system must provide all useful information that evokes confidence in decision making:

  • Energy Usage and Cost Analysis
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Energy Procurement and Bill Verification
  • Marginal energy costs per production unit
  • Sub-billing and Cost Allocation
  • Baseline, benchmark, and forecast energy
  • Measurement and Verification
  • Multi-site Analysis and Load Aggregation
  • Power Quality Analysis
  • Centralized Energy Information data store
  • Web portal and Digital Dashboards
  • Enterprise Data Quality
  • Interoperability with disparate data source

Solution Overview

Customer Satisfaction

One of our first line customers is the Operations personnel, those that are striving to operate their facility safely and efficiently. These types of efforts are to help them achieve that goal and make maximum effective use of all assets. That’s why they will embrace the use of field digital technology and power metering which allows all systems in the facility to be integrated at a centrally based system control center. Provide your operators and maintenance personnel the ability to clearly see everything that is happening in the plant – operationally and diagnostically. They can now know the status of each operation and have all the information they need to make correct and timely decisions.

The cost justification of an intelligent based system for a facility is more compelling for a new facility versus a migration of an existing facility. Digital field buses are often justified on the basis of the benefits of advanced diagnostics. Another advantage of the field bus alternative is that all diagnostics are done non-obtrusively: diagnostics are done from normal plant operating data. The migration of fieldbus technology must just be the next step into a framework that allows and empowers organizations the ability to perform a superior level of diagnostics over traditional analog systems, perform all diagnostics without interrupting the process, and perform process diagnostics, such as modeling.
